Excerpt: Unfortunately, my relationship at the time had been failing very slowly. I had found stability in every part of life after moving to New York - almost finished with undergrad and found a decent job - said of my relationship, which was the only reason I’d moved in the first place. After a long shift, I sat outside at the back of the store to process all that was going on in my life. My decisions, what to do, how to move back if I wanted to, how to stay if I wanted that. Suddenly, I heard a familiar and comforting squawk. I looked up and saw a crow hopping around the edges of the dumpster. It cawed, rocking back and forth to announce it’s abundant find, before taking the plunge into the heap of trash. It wasn’t long before it’s friends arrived to take part in the wonders discarded by wasteful humans.

As soon as the crow had made its presence known, my mind was pulled away from the mangled corners of itself to the surface. I was no longer gripped by the worries of a failing relationship or the stresses of life’s unknown next step. I only wanted to watch this group of silly black birds. All of them granted with their own personality if one only gave enough time to notice.
